5.10 DEMONSTRATE RESEARCH- BASED INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES FOR DEVELOPING STUDENTS' ABILITY TO READ CRITICALLY.

Teaching students to read critically and for purpose was a very big deal from my CT to begin the year. Together with students we created our critical reading skills poster that hangs near the library. She also has several signs that remind students to read critically with a purpose. We also do a classroom read aloud before lunch with The Magic Treehouse books, we continually ask students to make predictions and think critically even when they're being read to. Teaching students and reminding students with signs to read critically allows students to have a purpose behind they're reading. I also believe when expecting students to read critically, they must be engaged and enjoy the material they are reading. If they don't have a purpose or enjoyment from reading the content, they will not be truly reading critically. We prompt our students to make predictions before, during, and after reading. We also encourage our students to identify the problem and the solution within the text they read. I believe these signs and our expectations demonstrate mastery of 5.10 by student performance.
