Social Studies: Good Citizen
This was one of my favorite lessons for the Impact on Student Learning Project. The pretest scores across the class were pretty average, as student had forgotten a lot of stuff over the summer. This is usual. They still have the information and remember when point are brought up, but most students needed a refresher on characteristics and actions of a good citizen. Getting to engage students higher order thinking and hear all their wonderful ideas throughout the lesson about how to be a good citizens was amazing. There wasn't a single idea that I was not excited about.
For the pre test assessment I gave them the studies weekly unit exam to obtain their pre test percentiles. After looking over their percents, I decided to go ahead with the lesson utilizing the studies weekly online component as well as their paper workbook we tend to use. I love using the online component as it has 3 questions on each page with varying levels of DOK difficulty. The students love earning coins for answering these and they help me guide and alter my instruction during the lesson as well.
The post test scores definitely had me very excited as I had several students that jumped to 100% proficiency. The class average jumped from 78% to 94% and I feel very successful with this lesson and could visibly see the impact I had on student learning. This was the only subject area of this project where I noticeably saw a difference in the knowledge and scores of all students. I truly believe this occurred because of the interactive, fun online component with questions.
