5.9 Demonstrate research-based comprehension instructional practices for developing students’ higher order thinking to enhance comprehension.

For this competency, I used an inference center to help students develop and enhance their inferencing skills when reading. Students should infer and make predictions when reading as this is a higher order thinking skill. This center is a mystery read. It gives several suspects and their descriptions. It then lays out a mystery and different clues that student will use to fill out a table that has students list the clue, who it can't be and why. This allows students to infer using the clues and narrow down the lists of suspects. It also engages their higher order thinking by having them explain why the clue led them to believe it could not be a specific person that they listed. Inferencing will be a skill students continue to build and use as they read throughout skill.
