5.13 Create an information intensive environment that includes print and digital text.

The classroom is very much focused around text and reading. Our school goal is for students to take at least 3 AR tests every day as well as utilizing our digital benchmark curriculum content. We utilize both text print and digital print in the classroom with several tools. Students each have their own book bin which contains 3-5 books from the classroom library as well as their two library books. One of their library books MUST be an AR book, if not both. We utilize both digital and print text in our classroom in a multitude of ways. Paired reading, independent reading, and even oral reading taking turns. These different strategies of reading also allow students to increase their fluency.

Charlotte County also has a program called MyOn. This allows younger students to access digital print versions of AR books. It also has to the option to orally read the book to the student. MyOn is based on student reading level, so students are only given book options within their reading range. As they continue to pass AR tests on their higher level books, their reading level will increase and add those book options to MyOn. MyOn is directly linked with AR so student can immediately take an AR quiz on a book they read/was read to them.

The other tools we utilize to demonstrate mastery of this skill is our benchmark curriculum. Each student has access to their online benchmark content through their canvas portal on classlink. Students all are familiar with how to access this and can use this or the print text when working and learning in class. I love this tool, because it gives students the option of print vs digital and also the option to read the story aloud to them when digital. Our classroom has a very balanced level of both text print as well as digital print and resources for students to utilize. When I am in my own classroom I will continue to incorporate both digital and print text in my classroom as it gives students the option to utilize both. Although I could totally eliminate print text, I think it is an important skill for students to have mastery of so that they do not rely on digital sources. This goes hand in hand with the STAR assessment data at the STAR assessment tests students ability to read. This demonstrates mastery of the 5.12 indicator because it shows that students utilize both print text as well as digital text.
