5.5 Demonstrate research-based instructional practices for developing phonics skills and word recognition.

For developing phonics with students, we do small group rotations. One of our rotations that is research based and seems to have the most affect on students is our Versa Tile learning system. Research shows that hand on learning with manipulatives is most effective. Research done by Literacy Lab shows that 6.6 million children under the age of 8 in the U.S. are on the track to reading failure. Versa Tiles is a hands on manipulative game that makes learning fun for students. This also allows students to self-correct if they tiles don't match the picture answer. This book was a phonics practice book where students match the picture to the written word to build word recognition. I also asked them whether the vowel was long or short to continue following our lessons path for the week.
