REFLECTION

I learned a lot through completion of this product. Things I may not have realized I was learning if I wasn't paying attention to student growth before versus after a lesson. This project has taught me many strategies that I can use as teaching tools. Assessments provide educators with ways to measure what students already know and what they have learned. Formative assessments throughout your lesson is just as important if not more important than summative assessments. Formative assessments allow us to guide, pace, and change our instruction during the lesson or in a future lesson before the summative assessment is given. If we don't see students actively mastering a formative assessment, that tells us they need to be taught differently and they are not ready for a summative assessment on the topic. These assessments help us maximize of effectiveness as educators in the classroom. I was able to look at students scores before and after the lesson on an individual level as well as a class average level. This really helps educators see the bigger picture. I absolutely plan to continue to use this assessment strategy in my own classroom and practices.

This project not only allowed me to learn how to analyze the data aspect of assessments and lessons, it also helped me as an educator see how to change my instruction to be more effective. In my Social Studies Lesson, I used an interactive online component with DOK leveled questions that the students were engaging with and answering to earn coins. This was the only lesson where the data showed 100% mastery post assessment and I was ecstatic about this information. This project showed me how to use and compile data to my advantage to make sure I am as effective as possible in the classroom. I was able to see student scores individually and as a whole average for pre test and post test of the lesson. I was able to see which student made great gains and which students struggled or stayed around the same score. This allows me to differ my instruction and use different teaching strategies and center activities to help those students as well.

Data analysis is so very important and I never would've understood its importance and large role if it hadn't been for this project. This project showed me the impact that I have on student learning. And sometimes the gains are big leaps, but even if it is the small improvements, we know and can see that we are being effective. No student is the same, their gains and leaps will vary and that is okay. Teachers can even use the data to pinpoint which students need extra instruction or practice. I also think it could be a positive thing to share with students on an individual level so they know how they are growing and can monitor their own learning. This project left a positive outlook on how I plan to teach as an educator. As I said before, I plane to use this in my classroom to monitor growth, assess growth data, and guide my instruction and interventions.
