5.4 Demonstrate research-based instructional practices for developing students’ phonological awareness.

This is a quick game we play during our center time. It is a game that can keep going, or can be played once. This helps students with phonological awareness as they have to think about the word cards they have in front of them and if any of their word matches the rhyming word ending. I love using this game and our syllable game to watch students' phonological awareness increase. Rhyming allows students to listen to the sounds within the word, break the sounds of the word apart, and determine which sound they are looking for to match as a rhyme. We also have another rhyming game that uses nonsense words. This helps students not focus on the word and what it means, but more so to solely focus on the sounds produced by the word. Another great tool we use is Heggerty. The Heggerty book allows us to use different approaches to enhances students reading as a whole.
