For my data analysis, I chose to complete this with Riddick who is an ELL student. I had to gather scores and data for all four subject areas. Seeing the growth in Riddick from the beginning of the year until now has been amazing.
After working in the classroom with Riddick since August, I've noticed that he hesitates and is shy when answering aloud. He usually does not raise his hand and needs to be called on to answer. He is always happy to answer when you ask him to though. When I looked at his scores for English from the beginning of the year, myself as well as my CT agreed that he has made great strides. Although he still does struggle with different subjects and topics, he is doing well and hanging right in there with other students. Riddick speaks English well but sometimes struggles and pauses to find more difficult words.
Although his scores are not showing he has mastered the content entirely, I do believe he knows more about each subject area than what the test data is showing. He does most of his work in the back of the classroom in a small group setting with other students who need more assistance as well. I think because there are other students there, it also is helping to boost his language and confidence. I think if the pre and post lesson assessments were verbal he may have done a better job. I noticed he missed comprehension questions and silly questions because he didn't fully understand the questions, not because he didn't know the correct answer. So I think that kind of was against his advantage. I think if the assessments were given verbally he would've scored much higher in all subject areas for post assessment.
In conclusion, this project has opened my eyes and also broadened my horizons how ways I can teach and even accommodate lessons and assessments for students. The way I teach greatly impacts how and what students can and will master in the classroom to carry on through the continuation of their education.
